Atlanta West End Rotarian Honored for His Rotary Commitment

On Friday, January 12, 2018, the Rotary Club of Atlanta West End announced the creation of the Richard Gerakitis Service Above Self Award and made a presentation of the award, named in Richard’s honor, to Richard Gerakitis himself. The award is intended to honor the Rotarian who has demonstrated extraordinary and dedicated service to the club on an extended basis. Richard not only earned the honor, he inspired the creation of the award. “I saw him walking the ten blocks, from his office to the Club’s meeting place at the Georgia Tech Conference Center, lugging all the audio-visual equipment with him,” recounted long-time Club member and Club Historian, Eric John, as he presented the inaugural award to Richard. It struck Eric that Richard had typified the Rotary motto, Service Above Self, in everything he had done with and for the Club over the years, and he decided it needed to be recognized.

Twice Richard has been president of the Rotary Club of Atlanta West End, 1993-94 and 2012-13, following in the footsteps of his father, George Gerakitis, who was Club President in 1983-84. Since joining the club in 1983, Richard has served in almost every official Club leadership role, and perhaps more importantly, always serves as the unofficial adviser, counselor and supporter of every Club president and board member who has served in Rotary with him. Besides continuing to shepherd the AV equipment each week, Richard is the Club’s current administrator, and makes sure all members know what happened last week, what’s coming up this week, and how they can serve the community in the West End every week.

The Richard Gerakitis Service Above Self Award will be given out annually to the individual who meets the high ideals of Service Above Self. In addition to receiving the award, the recipient will be asked to designate a charity of her or his choosing to receive a donation from the Club. Not surprisingly, Richard did not hesitate in designating his donation to the Arthur M. Blank Family Youth YMCA, an organization that Richard has been a part of since 1963.He is currently on the Metro Y board of directors, and he has been a member and generous Y donor for many years. The Rotary Club of Atlanta West End is proud to have Richard Gerakitis as a most distinguished member, and as the inaugural recipient of the Club’s Service Above Self Award.
