Roswell Rotary Collects Donations for Troops with “Adopt -a- Platoon”

Founded in 2009 under the leadership of Roswell Rotary President Elwyn Gaissert, “Adopt –a- Platoon” is an annual fundraiser to support a troop with a Roswell connection. The name was settled on because the first year’s recipient in 2010 was a platoon leader. This year’s recipient was a helicopter squadron stationed in Afghanistan, under the command of Captain Andrea Witherspoon. The number of platoon members can vary, but generally ranges from 40 to 50 men and women.

In January, more than 20 Boy Scouts and Interact students joined members of the Roswell Rotary Club to pack donations of toiletries, snacks, coffee, paper, pens, magazines and letters of encouragement. In record time, over 950 pounds were packed and shipped that morning for an arrival that coincided with Valentine’s Day.

We know that these men and women have little access to stores to obtain the items the Armed Services do not provide. We were glad to lend a hand and to thank them for their service.
